Purpose
The PPI provides an early measure of inflation at the production stage by tracking changes in the prices producers receive for their output. It is an important indicator of price movements within the productive sectors of the economy and supports economic analysis and policymaking.
What the PPI Measures
STATIN publishes an Output Producer Price Index, which measures changes in the prices of goods as they leave the producer. The index is compiled using an industry-based approach, with establishments classified according to their principal economic activity using the Jamaica Industrial Classification (JIC) system. The PPI currently covers the following industries:
- Mining and Quarrying
- Manufacturing
Survey Type: Business Survey
Release Frequency: Monthly
Key Outputs: Producer Price Index (PPI); Industry Price Indices; Monthly Producer Price Index Bulletin; Statistical Tables
Why the PPI Matters
The PPI is a key indicator of inflationary pressures within the production sector and provides valuable insights into changes in producer prices before they reach consumers. It is used to monitor producer price inflation; support the compilation of national accounts; inform economic and market analysis; support contract escalation and price adjustment clauses; guide business planning and pricing decisions; and provide data for research and policy development.
